I know that feeling well. I, too, once wrestled with those same doubts, afraid to step out of my comfort zone and pursue something greater. But despite my insecurities, I made a choice: to trust God's plan.
And here’s something I’ve learned along the way, sometimes, the environment around you is trying to condition you to believe something is wrong with you. It whispers that you don’t belong, that you aren’t enough, that you’ll never measure up. It tries to shape you into a version of yourself that doubts your worth. It tries to reduce you to nothing more than a charity case, insignificant, without value.
But that is a lie.
There is nothing wrong with you.
Jesus says in Ephesians 2:10: "For we are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
Not mistake. Not accident. Not second-class. Masterpiece.
God crafted you with intention, designed you for purpose, and equipped you for the path He set before you. And no environment, no insecurity, no doubt can change that truth.
Pushed Beyond Comfort
Over the last five years, God has stretched me further than I ever imagined, shining a light on my deepest fears, failure, judgment, trust, leadership, deep industry knowledge, even math. Yes, math.
When I transitioned from the nonprofit world into banking in 2019, I felt exposed, uncertain, and unprepared. Growing up poor and in the foster care system, I constantly battled insecurities, always questioning whether I truly belonged. So stepping into a world I knew little about? That was terrifying.
In those early months, I struggled with whom to trust, unsure of who genuinely supported me and who was quietly waiting for me to fail. And if we’re honest, we’ve all been there, grappling with doubt, second-guessing our abilities, wondering if we’re really where we’re supposed to be.
Like Gideon in the Bible, I felt stripped down to the basics, forced to rely on God’s strength rather than my own.
Gideon wasn’t the strongest, the smartest, or the most qualified, but God called him anyway. And in the midst of setbacks and failures, Gideon emerged victorious, not because he had all the answers, but because he trusted in the One who did.
God will always show you who is for you and who is against you. He will equip you, even in the face of failure.
Failure is painful, but it is not final.
What is final is refusing to try, staying stuck in fear, or allowing doubt to keep you from taking that first step.
Not giving our all, not doing it scared, and not trusting fully in God, that is what leads to defeat.
As believers, we often quote Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
But do we really grasp what it means?
In the NIV version, the emphasis on "THIS" is striking: "I can do THIS through Him who gives me strength."
THIS, whatever is in front of you.
THIS challenge.
THIS battle.
THIS moment of doubt.
THIS environment that may not value your worth.
THIS boss who may not see you.
Whatever you’re facing, God is already giving you the strength to overcome it.
This promise should fill us with hope and confidence, not just in good times, but in the hardest moments when we feel like giving up.
Because here’s the truth: God’s strength is not dependent on our abilities or resources. Regardless of our circumstances, He empowers us with His unwavering presence and provision.
Even before I fully understood faith, I saw God move in my life. As a young boy navigating some of my darkest days, I knew He was there. And I know the same is true for you.
Do It Scared
So the next time you hear Philippians 4:13, don’t just repeat it, believe it.
It’s more than a cliché. It’s a promise.
No matter what obstacles you face, God will equip you.
No matter how unqualified you feel, God has already called you.
No matter how scared you are, do it anyway.
No matter what environment or soil you find yourself in, keep growing.
You are not a mistake.
You are not disqualified.
You are a masterpiece.
Keep trusting. Keep believing. And most of all, keep doing it scared.
