Today I’m reflecting on something simple but meaningful, my barber. I’ve been with the same barber for about 15 years, and over that time, I’ve watched her grow. When I first started going to her, I’d bring my son, he was maybe four or five years old and he’d always complain that she was hurting his head. I had to admit, she was a little heavy-handed back then. But through the years, her hands have become lighter, more careful, more intentional.
That change reminds me that skill isn’t just about strength, it’s about control, care, and presence. I usually get a razor shave, and when that heavy hand sneaks back in, I leave with a nick or two, which my wife is always quick to point out. So today, I’m grateful for light hands. I’m grateful for the gentleness that comes when someone is centered and in a good mood — because that spirit shows up in their work.
This verse reminds me that gentleness is not weakness; it’s power under control. Just like my barber’s steady hand can shape and smooth with precision, our own gentleness in words and actions can accomplish what force never could.
