Gratitude Focus: Today, I Am Grateful For Community

Reflection/Why I’m Grateful:

Yesterday, I attended a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce event, while another one of our leaders attended an event in Lemay.

It’s always good when we can get out and support the communities we serve.

When I attend these events, I try to listen closely to what’s on people’s minds.

There’s no doubt the complexion of America is changing right before our eyes.

But what struck me was the subtle sense that while the faces may be changing, the dreams are not.

People who are new to America, or first-generation Americans, want the same things as families who have been here for generations: opportunity, security, belonging, growth.

There was a powerful call to community — to lift each other up, to support each other.

I sat there reflecting on how blessed I am to live in America.

I’ve never lived anywhere else to compare it firsthand, but when you consider that people vote with their feet and wallets, it says a lot.

People choose to come here, and they bring their best hopes and ideas with them.

I prayed yesterday that after 20 years of growing divides, we find a new call to community.

That we attract people with a growth mindset into our neighborhoods and our corporations.

America has always been innovative precisely because we take the best people and the best ideas from around the world, breathe oxygen into them, and create environments where human flourishing is possible.

I believe that is still possible — and it begins with building stronger, more hopeful communities.
