Gratitude Focus: People from different backgrounds bringing unique perspectives to the table

Reflection/Why I’m Grateful:

Today, I’m grateful for people who come from so many different backgrounds and can sit together in a boardroom, talk strategy, and bring truly unique perspectives.

I serve on the board of a construction company that meets a few times a year, and while the meetings aren’t long, they’re rich. Yes, I’m learning more about the construction industry and the drivers of success and systemic risk. But what’s most fascinating is listening to the varied perspectives that this company has intentionally curated around the board table.

Part of why I serve on boards, beyond the contribution, is because it sharpens my thinking and my leadership. You are only as good as the people around you. And what I’ve come to really appreciate is the level of preparation people bring. Folks come ready to engage, and they speak from lived experience.

I also love that we’re not afraid to ask the so-called “basic” questions, because so often, it’s in the basics that the deeper insight lives.

I wish more boards, and more people, felt empowered to show up prepared, curious, and authentic.
