Gratitude Focus: Grateful For The Power of Collective Hope

Reflection/Why I’m Grateful:

I am grateful for the power of collective hope and legacy institutions that still carry us forward.

Today, I had the deep honor of keynoting the 60th anniversary celebration of the Edwardsville Chapter of the NAACP.

The energy in the room was unforgettable, charged with people who believe in justice, equity, and possibility. But what moved me most wasn’t the applause or the legacy. It was the scholarships. Dozens of young people from all racial backgrounds being poured into, not just honored, but invested in.

That moment wasn’t just about celebration. It was about commitment. It was a down payment on the kind of future we say we want.

"Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."
 — Galatians 6:2

As a child, the NAACP represented hope to me. It was protection. It was voice. It was power for those who had none. Today, in a time when systems often fall short, institutions like the NAACP matter more than ever. Because when the systems break, it’s our collectives that catch us.

My message to the room was simple:

  • Reframe the weight.
  • Don’t retreat.
  • Don’t disengage.
  • Plug in. Be present. Take your fate into your own hands.

You are responsible. I am responsible. We are responsible.

Because institutions only matter when people show up for them.
And this hour? It’s yours. It’s mine. It’s ours.

What legacy institution are you being called to show up for—and how can your presence become someone else’s protection?
