Gratitude Focus: I’m grateful for the confidence to skip the small talk.

Reflection/Why I’m Grateful:

Today, I attended a social event with a friend and struck up a conversation with a few folks from the banking industry, one was on a bank board and another a CEO. As we talked, someone asked me about my transition into banking , was it easy?

I told them it wasn’t. Leadership principles are often transferable across industries, but the regulatory framework and relationship circles in banking are different. That brought to mind one of my earliest experiences after joining the industry. I had walked into a private club where a group of bankers were gathered. As I approached, the conversation hushed. Someone asked me about my day, and I mentioned meeting with a housing advocacy group that challenges financial institutions to invest in low- to moderate-income communities. That revelation changed the tone , it was clear my presence disrupted some assumptions.

But both then and now, I’ve chosen to go beyond surface-level talk. Whether it’s that early moment or today’s gathering, I’m learning that when you’re grounded in who you are, you don’t need to warm up with small talk , you can go straight to the substance. And often, that’s where real connection and trust begin.

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” – Colossians 4:6

Conversations don’t have to be long to be meaningful, when they’re rooted in grace and authenticity, they leave people with something to savor.

When’s the last time you bypassed small talk and shared something that really mattered?
