This month, I’m reflecting on wisdom and its role in leadership.
American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Always do what you are afraid to do.” It’s a powerful statement about growth a cornerstone of great leadership. Fear often signals an opportunity for growth, pushing us to step outside our comfort zones and embrace the unknown. Growth doesn’t happen by default but by design, and it comes in many forms.
For me, growth has been intentional. I’ve surrounded myself with people friends, family, and my business team who I’ve given license to speak into my life. I read constantly, and at present, I’m immersed in Poor Charlie’s Almanack by Charles T. Munger. One idea from the book that resonates deeply is the importance of mastering a handful of models across disciplines frameworks every leader should know.
What strikes me most is how these models align with my belief that true value often emerges at intersections between industries, departments, and even seemingly unrelated disciplines. This belief has shaped my own journey, including my studies in social work, business, and theology. It’s also why I dedicate time to causes in health, finance, and education. By applying this cross-disciplinary approach, I’ve seen firsthand how looking at problems through different frameworks creates value.
Embracing these opportunities for growth often requires overcoming fear the fear of failure, the fear of the unknown, or the fear of stepping away from the familiar. Wisdom teaches us that what lies on the other side of fear is often transformative.
Growth requires curiosity and courage, and as leaders, we must model this if we expect others to follow.
But growth isn’t just about adding knowledge it’s about transformation through wisdom.
Leadership and the Power of Wisdom
What defines a great leader? Is it charisma, vision, or a sharp skill set? While those qualities hold value, the true distinction between a leader and a follower lies in one often-overlooked trait: wisdom.
Leadership isn’t about always having the right answers it’s about knowing which questions to ask and seeking the best path forward, especially when the road ahead is uncertain. A great leader doesn’t rely solely on instinct or expertise but embraces the humility to learn and the courage to adapt.
Years ago, I worked in an organization whose business model was being challenged. The data confirmed what we had been sensing for years the broader environment was shifting before our eyes. We needed to pivot, to diversify the business. Yet, this wasn’t received well because there was so much emotional investment in the existing model. We began the painful process of change but didn’t get all the way there.
I often reflect on those times and think of Kodak. Despite inventing digital photography, Kodak lacked the wisdom to embrace it. The company clung to its profitable film business, failing to adapt to market changes. That decision ultimately led to its decline a cautionary tale of how refusing to embrace wisdom can stifle growth and lead to obsolescence.
Proverbs 2:1-4 offers timeless insight:
"My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding... if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God."
This scripture reminds us that wisdom isn’t handed to us it must be sought intentionally. It requires persistence, humility, and a willingness to embrace growth, even when it’s uncomfortable. Wisdom transforms knowledge into action, empowering leaders to inspire trust, navigate challenges, and align others around a shared purpose.
Wisdom in Action: A Lesson from Sports
Most people know I’m not much of a sports fan, but like many of you, I find valuable leadership lessons wherever I can. Tom Brady’s career offers a powerful example of how wisdom can define a leader. He wasn’t the fastest quarterback, nor did he have the strongest arm, yet he excelled through preparation, adaptability, and strategic decision-making.
Brady’s ability to study his opponents, trust his team, and make the right plays under pressure set him apart. Leadership isn’t always about strength or speed it’s about the wisdom to make sound decisions when it matters most.
When I transitioned into banking, just a year into the role, the global pandemic brought unprecedented instability to financial services. It wasn’t enough that I was new to the industry; the pandemic compounded the challenge of this unlikely transition. Like Brady, I had to lean on preparation, adaptability, and trust both in my team and in the strategies we developed to navigate those turbulent times.
Ecclesiastes 7:12
Another scripture that resonates deeply with this theme is Ecclesiastes 7:12:
"Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves those who have it."
This verse highlights a profound truth: while resources like money can provide temporary protection, it is wisdom that offers lasting transformation and preservation. Wisdom equips us to navigate life’s challenges, guide our teams with clarity and purpose, and leave a legacy of resilience and impact.
Final Thoughts
Leadership is more than charisma or skill it’s about the wisdom to listen, learn, and lead with purpose. Drawing inspiration from stories like Tom Brady’s and scriptures like Proverbs 2:1-4, we see that success often comes from strategy, preparation, and the ability to adapt. Wisdom must be actively sought, not passively expected.
Whether guiding a team, family, or community, great leaders cultivate humility, clarity, and a focus on others.
