"I often think about you, mother, and wonder if you're proud, of the man that I've become to date as you watch me through the cloud, as I navigate my way through life, I wonder if it was you, who instilled in me a faith so strong and the will to see life through." — Excerpted from a larger poem by Orvin Kimbrough
My mother passed away tragically many years ago, and each Mother’s Day since has been a blend of mourning what was lost and being grateful for what was gained. Over the years, I've had many "mothers", women who have stepped into my life offering wisdom, encouragement, and support.
As I reflect on the major milestones in my life, I recognize a recurring theme: behind most opportunities were women who either directly supported me or influenced others who did. From the Scholarship Foundation that helped me attend college to my very first speaking engagement arranged by the tireless Marie from the Division of Family Services. My godmother constantly reminds me, "I pray for you often," offering spiritual support that lifts my spirits. Professors like Janice and Robin didn't just educate me, they propelled me forward like gusts of wind, followed by my first boss, Yvonne, one of the most dynamic leaders I've ever known.
Significantly, there were those who looked at my assessments and reframed them from a strengths perspective, highlighting my gifts rather than focusing on challenges. This positive reframe was crucial in building my confidence and shaping my path forward.
These women, like the biblical figures of Esther and Deborah, exemplify courage and wisdom. Esther used her royal position to bravely advocate for her people, and Deborah led with decisive strength. Similarly, these women in my life have guided, mentored, and supported me, shaping the person I am today.
Mary Magdalene's story resonates deeply with me. Known for her unwavering loyalty to Jesus after being healed of seven demons, her dedication is a testament to transformative faith. She played a vital role in the early Christian church, reminding me of the quiet strength and resilience of so many women who have been instrumental in my journey.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, I want to extend my deepest gratitude and love to all the moms, grandmas, aunts, wives, and sisters—including Carla Mae, a nun who helped shape my perspective on loving and coalescing people. To the mother of my children, who has been a constant source of love and support, your impact is profound and appreciated more than words can express.
A Prayer for Mother’s Day
Dear Lord, on this day when we honor our mothers, I pray for their continued strength and resilience. May they feel Your love and peace profoundly, sustaining them in their beautiful and challenging role as nurturers and leaders. Bless them with health, wisdom, joy, and the deep satisfaction of seeing their labor of love bear fruit in the lives they touch.
Happy Mother's Day.
