Sunday Reflection: What Sets Leaders Apart Wisdom

When I was younger, I yearned to be stronger, faster, smarter not to outshine anyone, but to feel capable and confident in my own skin. Maybe you’ve felt that same desire the need to prove something, to yourself or others. Over the years, as I’ve stepped into leadership roles and taken on greater responsibilities, I’ve discovered that strength and speed matter less than I thought. What matters most the thing I long for now is wisdom.

I’ve come to believe that wisdom is what truly distinguishes leaders from followers. Proverbs 2:1-4 beautifully captures the essence of this pursuit:

"My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you…" (Proverbs 2:1)

This verse reminds us that wisdom isn’t just about hearing or learning; it’s about internalizing. Fresh out of college, degree in hand, I could talk about all the theories whether in social work or business. What I lacked, though, was practical application. I lacked experience and exposure. You’ve probably encountered someone like that “book smart” but still needing time for that knowledge to mature into wisdom. Wisdom becomes transformative when it moves from head knowledge to heart application.

"…turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding…" (Proverbs 2:2)

This speaks to intentionality. Wisdom requires listening carefully, seeking understanding, and leaning into the counsel of others. Just this week, someone shared a simple yet profound piece of advice: “When engaging with board members, assume you’re starting from scratch every time you reintroduce a strategy or concept. They have full-time jobs and other responsibilities.” That reframing wasn’t just practical it was wise. It reminded me that effective communication starts with empathy and clarity.

"…if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding…" (Proverbs 2:3)

This highlights the persistence required to gain wisdom. It’s about pursuing clarity and truth and being willing to ask for help. When I transitioned into banking a completely new field for me I needed a lot of help, and I still do. What did I do? I assembled a great team and leaned into their wisdom. Over the last year, I’ve spoken to multiple corporate and nonprofit teams, and my message has been simple: If you don’t trust the person next to you, you won’t be able to tap into their wisdom. Wisdom is rarely found in isolation it often comes through dialogue and collaboration.

"…and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure…" (Proverbs 2:4)

This verse elevates wisdom to the status of a precious treasure. It challenges us to actively seek wisdom with the same intensity we place on success, wealth, or recognition. For most of my life, even in childhood, I have always sought the company of older people. Why? Because many of them are wise they’ve “been there and done that.” I wanted the benefit of their insights to avoid repeating mistakes and to accelerate my learning. I relentlessly cultivate connections with people who are wise. Wisdom isn’t accidental it’s intentional.

These verses remind me of times when I was desperately searching for answers navigating the uncertainties of foster care, struggling to gain access to college, stepping into unfamiliar roles, and wrestling with deep self-doubt. And let me be honest this wasn’t a fleeting feeling. Self-doubt was a constant companion.

But through those experiences, I discovered an essential truth: wisdom isn’t handed to us. It must be desired, actively sought, cherished, and most importantly applied. Wisdom gives us confidence. It reminds us that no matter what we’ve been through, who we are, or where we come from, we carry a gift.

The most impactful leaders the ones who endure, who inspire, and who leave a legacy are wise because they understand this fundamental truth: every person matters. The quiet one, the fast one, the deliberate one, the reflective one. Wisdom teaches leaders to see the value in every individual, recognizing that it’s the diversity of perspectives and talents that strengthens a team, a community, and a vision.

So, the real question is: How will you seek wisdom today? Will you lean into growth and value wisdom as the treasure it truly is? Wisdom is a gift from God, but it requires effort on our part. Will you ask the hard questions, trust God’s guidance, and treat wisdom as the key that sets leaders apart

True leaders aren’t born they’re shaped by their relentless pursuit of wisdom. The journey begins when you decide to start. Will you begin today?
