Years ago, I joined a writer's club in St. Louis where the facilitator shared a piece of advice that stuck with me: “So you want to write a book?”
She started the discussion with this obvious question and statement, "First, have something to say." While that point stuck with me in an unusual way, it wasn’t a new thought. Over 20 years ago, when I graduated college knowing the statistics of foster kids who complete college, only 1-3%, I thought I had something to say, but I was uncertain.
Being uncertain can actually freeze motion. When my mind and commitment got unstuck, I realized the process actually requires you to take the first step and write down your thoughts, novel idea, right? Nope, it’s not; it’s basic, but choosing what to say and what not to say is the challenge. There are some things that I can ramble on and on about, what about you? Then the process required that we get an editor and publisher. My suggestion: ideally, get an editor before you start.
For all who are wondering, the process of writing a book is more than just pounding words into a computer; it exacts its emotional and physical pound of flesh. Here are some things I found: The process can be emotionally draining, retraumatizing, isolating, time-intensive, and spiritual, especially when writing a memoir. A memoir often forces you to reflect deeply on your experiences. You are almost on the outside looking in, trying to make sense of whatever "it" is that you are focused on. In my memoir, I sought to answer the question that I get from anyone who knows anything about me: "How did you make it?"
You too have a book in you and don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t do it and be successful in your day job, you absolutely can, but there are areas you will sacrifice to get it done. The book process itself is a microcosm of life, you make choices. Follow my journey and get behind-the-scenes insights by joining the list!

In what ways have I been holding myself back because of the fear of what others might say? How can I focus on real impact instead of just appearances?
