Unqualified? Perfect.

By traditional metrics, I have rarely been “qualified” for the opportunities I’ve pursued.

I’ve never excelled at standardized tests. If those scores alone had dictated my future, I wouldn’t have been “qualified” to attend college. But someone looked beyond the numbers and took a chance on me. I walked through that door and I didn’t just make it, I thrived.

Early in my career, I wasn’t qualified for any job I applied for at least not on paper. I had the education but lacked the experience. When I applied to business school, the admissions test suggested I wasn’t cut out for it. I was admitted on probation, with the condition that I pass rigorous quantitative courses in my first year courses meant to expose the gaps in my preparation.

But I didn’t just survive; I leaned in, did the work, and thrived.

When I started at United Way, I wasn’t qualified for major gifts fundraising. I had never done it. When I became CEO, the whispers followed me “He doesn’t have the experience.”

At United Way, I launched an initiative to increase diversity on nonprofit boards a mission I continue today through Midwest BankCentre. I believed nonprofit boards should reflect the communities they serve. That work sparked my interest in corporate boards. I mentored a group of aspiring leaders and asked a prominent leader to share his insights with them and me. His response stayed with me:

“Corporate boards look for qualifications.”

When I joined the board of a bank, imposter syndrome crept in. I sat at the table with seasoned veterans, buried in technical jargon. That nagging voice “You’re not qualified” tried to take root.

When I became CEO, the stamp of “unqualified” came down hard. The whispers didn’t stop. And when I stepped into the role of board chair, the doubts only grew louder.

I’ve been “unqualified” my entire life.

Maybe you have too.

But here’s the truth:
Being unqualified doesn’t mean a thing.

It’s not about whether you check every box it’s about what you do with the opportunity.

The moment the door opens, qualifications stop mattering.
What matters is how you show up, execute, and grow into the role.

Momentum is everything.
Success isn’t about waiting until you feel ready it’s about stepping in, accelerating your learning, and surrounding yourself with people who challenge you to rise.

It’s about outgrowing the voices yours and others that can’t see beyond your starting point.

Because here’s the reality: Some people will never acknowledge how far you’ve come.

You’re not in the room by accident.
You’re there because you belong.

So, if you feel unqualified perfect.

The world belongs to those willing to show up before they’re ready.

The truth is, we rarely feel ready for the roles that stretch us the most. But the moments when we feel 'unqualified' are often the catalysts that shape us into who we’re meant to become. If you find yourself in that space lean into it. Growth doesn’t happen in comfort zones. It happens when we choose to stand tall in unfamiliar rooms, when we silence the doubt long enough to let action speak for itself.

Before you go, carry these three reminders with you as you step into your next opportunity:

  1. Growth Happens in the Doing – Waiting to feel ready is the fastest way to stay where you are. Confidence isn’t a prerequisite; it’s a byproduct of showing up and doing the work.

  2. Surround Yourself with the Right People – Proximity to the right voices accelerates your growth. Seek out those who challenge, uplift, and expand your thinking, and let go of those who can’t see your progress.

  3. Own the Room – You didn’t land the opportunity by accident. Stop questioning whether you deserve to be there. Your seat at the table is already earned, focus on delivering, not justifying.

You don’t need to be fully qualified. You just need to be fully present.
